KOLOROT
A Puzzle of Rotating Colors
KOLOROT is a puzzle game about rotating tiles to match the colors along neighboring edges. The tiles are fixed in place, so all you do is tap to turn them. Match the colors along every shared edge to clear the puzzle.
The Law of Decreasing Entropy
See a jumble of colors and you naturally want to put them in order.
Apparently, this board follows the opposite rule to the real world: the law of decreasing entropy (though your own entropy will increase in the process).
Turn the tiles one by one and order gradually emerges on the board. We wanted to make a game that lets you enjoy that feeling again and again.
This is not a puzzle designed to leave you agonizing over a difficult problem. Still, simply turning whatever catches your eye will not get you very far. Sometimes you need to think a little ahead.
Move between thinking and turning tiles without thinking, and before you know it you are absorbed in the board. There is something almost Zen about that feeling, and we hope you get a taste of it.
Play for a few minutes while waiting for a bus or train, or keep going when you have nothing else to do. Put the board in order at your own pace. Your head might follow along.
For those who like their puzzles fast and frantic, there is Speed Mode. Race through puzzle after puzzle and see how many you can clear before time runs out.
Inspirations
The tiles’ appearance and color-matching design were inspired by Wiggle from Native Studio.
Wiggle is a competitive two-player board game. Players place tiles so that colors and lines connect, competing for points from the areas they enclose.
The puzzle itself is based on MacMahon Squares, devised by the mathematician Percy MacMahon.
Each square is divided diagonally into four triangles colored using three colors. The puzzle uses 24 distinct tiles, which are arranged so that neighboring edges match in color.
KOLOROT takes MacMahon’s puzzle and removes tile placement, fixing the tiles in position. All the player does is tap to turn them.
To make the game easy to pick up on a smartphone, we took away the complexity of deciding where each tile goes and kept just the part where you rotate tiles to match their colors.
